One Step at a Time - #dVerse #crossroads #fate #poem #poetry #poetrycommunity @YvetteMCalleiro

Hello, beautiful readers! For dVerse's Poet's Pub, Merril introduces us to Poetics: Fated. Today's challenge invites us to write a poem about fate. We can choose to write about making a decision at a crossroads or choosing/avoiding a fate, or we can respond to our own interpretation of fate.

One of the poems she shared was "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, which is one of my favorite poems. Most people focus on whether his choice made a difference and whether it was a positive or negative one. What appeals to me is that he made a choice and made peace with it. I struggle with making decisions and tend to play the "what if" game before, during, and after. So, I decided to write a free verse poem about that.

One Step at a Time

destiny is created
one decision at a time
whether subtle nuances
softly nudge you in a direction
or timely demands crush you
until you pick your path
most often
we travel upon life's trail
with nary a notice of its turns
but sometimes
a complex crossroad creates pause
the mind dithers with its decision
the psyche struggles with the mind's scenarios
creating crippling indecisiveness
until we realize
to stand still gets us nowhere
choose a path
embrace the journey
and create a destiny
worth living

  1. You point to something essential; when it matters, one must make a choice. Faith shall not be excuse.

  2. You are so right. I suppose every second we make choices that we don't even notice. It's only the ones we think are important that stop us, but not making a decision is a decision, too. Thank you for writing to the prompt!

  3. "to stand still gets us nowhere"
I agree with that if it has a caveat added: to stand still for an unreasonable amount of time gets us nowhere.
Sometimes it's nice to stand still and, as the old saying goes, "smell the roses"! :)

  5. Exactly so, Yvette. One can think oneself into paralysis. I remember the quote, "act, the world moves with you" or something to that effect.
