#TankaTuesday #Poetry Challenge - #Syllabic #poem #poetrycommunity #tankaprose #wolftotem #NativeAmericanZodiacAnimals @YvetteMCalleiro @YvetteMCalleiro.bsky.social

Hello, beautiful readers! This week is not only the last #TankaTuesday Poetry Challenge of the year but also the last one ever (or at least, for a very long time). 😢 After eight years of creating these challenges, poet Colleen Chesebro is venturing into new paths in 2025. While I'm sad to see this end, I'm excited for the projects she will bring in the future.

This week, Colleen has challenged us to find our Native American zodiac animal and write a syllabic poem about it.

My Native American zodiac animal is a wolf. When reading the description of the Wolf totem, I felt instantly connected. It describes me perfectly! To learn more about the Wolf totem, click here and here.

I chose to write a tanka prose today. A tanka prose consists of a paragraph of prose and a tanka poem (five lines with a syllabic pattern of 5-7-5-7-7). Tanka proses are always titled.

The Wolf Within

Leaning against the wall, I silently observe my surroundings, making sure danger does not lurk in the darkness. Those around me talk, laugh, and merrily mingle. I absorb their joyous energy and send gratitude for their friendship and for their understanding of my need to sometimes be a wallflower among them. Feeling nothing but the love radiating from the group, I step into the light and join the party, freely dancing to the music.

alone within pack
protective of family
keenly refined senses
instinctively spots danger
follows the enlightened path

I've only been a part of the #TankaTuesday poetry community for the past two years, but I have met wonderful people and am grateful for being allowed into their group. Luckily, several poets have their own challenges that they host, so I hope to start joining in new challenges in the new year. As I do, I will share my poetry with you here, and maybe you can join me in writing!

If you'd like to end the year by finding your zodiac animal and writing a poem, click here. Happy New Year, everyone! :-)

December Book Reviews #bookreview #books #amreading #readingcommunity #VietnamWar #war #warstories #BDB #BlackDaggerBrotherhood #poetry #poetrycommunity @pdoggbiker @bakeandwrite @robbiecheadle.bsky.social @faerywordwitching @faerywordwitching.bsky.social @YvetteMCalleiro

Hello, beautiful readers! I finished the book I started reading in November and found time to read two more this month! I shared all the books I read in 2024 in a separate post which you can view here. These are my reviews for this month.

Genre: Biographies of the Vietnam War, Vietnam War History

Pages: 464 pages

Book Blurb:

In 1970, John Kowalski was among the many young, inexperienced soldiers sent to Vietnam to participate in a contentious war. Referred to as “Cherries” by their veteran counterparts, these recruits were plunged into a horrific reality. The on-the-job training was rigorous, yet most of these youths were ill-prepared to handle the severe mental, emotional, and physical demands of combat. Experiencing enemy fire and observing death up close initiates a profound transformation that is irreversible.

The author excels at storytelling. Readers affirm feeling immersed alongside the characters, partaking in their struggle for survival, experiencing the fear, awe, drama, and grief, observing acts of courage, and occasionally sharing in their humor.

"Cherries" presents an unvarnished account, and upon completion, readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the trials these young men faced over a year. It's a narrative that grips the reader throughout.

My Review:

I have never really been into war stories or biographies, but this novel captivated me from the very beginning until long after I finished it. Although the author is telling about his experiences in the Vietnam War, it does not read like a biography or autobiography. It reads like a novel, and I couldn't put it down.

The author doesn't sugarcoat the events he endured nor does he curb the language used. This is a raw account of the terrors and tragedies that took place during his time in Vietnam. Though each war has its own unique qualities, this book helps the common person to understand the trauma soldiers go through during war. Truly, our soldiers deserve more compassion, respect, and support when they return.

I could not help but care for each of the soldiers in this book. My heart hurt every time one of them sustained an injury or lost their lives. I cannot even begin to fathom living in the conditions that they had to deal with on a daily basis, including riding out a hurricane while in the jungle! The author shows the humane side of the soldiers and how they relied on one another and their good luck charms (I'm still angry at the person who stole the six-pack of beer!). You cannot help but see these soldiers as young men who simply want to do their duty and get back home in one piece. Sadly, many of them did not. :'(

This author is a hero. Not only did he save the lives of many of his fellow soldiers (while also having luck on his side on many occasions), he also courageously relived the entire experience to create this novel so readers can learn about the realities of this war.

Although there were a few typos, I still gave this book five stars because the storyline was so powerful. I highly recommend you read this book. You will walk away with a better understanding of what war is really like, and you will appreciate the sacrifices others make for your freedoms.

Lover Arisen (The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, Book 20)

by JR Ward

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Pages: 429

Book Blurb:

True love brings a deadly threat to the Black Dagger Brotherhood in this sizzling new novel in J.R. Ward’s #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Possessed by the demon Devina, Balthazar is once again on the hunt for the
Book of Spells—and fighting an undeniable attraction to a woman. As a thief, he has stolen a lot of things…but he never thought his heart would be taken by another. Especially not by a human.

As a homicide detective, Erika Saunders knows there is something otherworldly going on in Caldwell, New York. Mutilated bodies that cannot be explained are all over her case list—and then there are her nightmares in which she’s hunted by shadows and captivated by a mysterious man who is both a suspect and a savior.

When Devina’s wish for true love is finally granted, Balthazar and Erika unwittingly become the gateway for the rebirth of an old enemy of the Brothers. Will the very thing that brings them together lead to the ultimate destruction of the Brotherhood? Or will they have to lose everything in order to save the race’s most sacred defenders?

My Review:

I am absolutely in love with this series. This book continues the incredible writing of the author. The main focus of this story is Balthazar and Erika, but the side stories of Rahvyn, Nate, and Lassiter as well as Devina's interference gutted me!

I was happy this book focused on Balthazar after his interaction with Erika in the previous book. Erika is the perfect female for him, and I loved their connection from the very beginning. The buildup of their passion and its rewards were so brilliantly written. JR Ward is an expert at writing these scenes.

Devina... How is it possible to love and despise a character at the same time? Lol! She is the epitome of a complex character, but her evil core never allows her to be redeemed. Her plot twists in this story were core-shaking, and I can only imagine the havoc she and her new beau will wreak in future books.

Nate... My heart breaks for him. The author better have a HEA coming his way. Seriously, how much more can this male handle?

Lassiter... I won't give anything away, but... pure gut punch! I didn't think I could love this fallen angel any more, but I do!

If you haven't read this series, it is absolutely amazing! Every single book! Plus, Passionflix is now creating a TV show of it, so jump on board the BDB fandom! You won't regret it!

(This is an adult book series. There is violence and passionate sex. Just an FYI in case you do not like those types of stories.)

by Colleen M Chesebro and Robbie Cheadle

Genre: Poetry Anthologies

Pages: 128

Book Blurb:

Sunflower Tanka, edited by Robbie Cheadle & Colleen M. Chesebro, is an annual anthology of contemporary tanka, tanka prose, & experimental tanka from a broad mix of new and established poetic voices from across the world.

Our theme, "Into the Light," draws inspiration from the way a young sunflower bud constantly turns to face the sun. Poets delved into the realms of death, love, and the natural world, capturing their human experiences in the timeless form of syllabic poetry.

Contributors to the first edition of the Sunflower Tanka: Suzanne Brace, Yvette M Calleiro, Kay Castenada, Luanne Castle, Robbie Cheadle, Colleen M. Chesebro, E.A. Colquitt, Melissa Davilio, Destiny, Tamiko Dooley, Lisa Fox, Cindy Georgakas, Chris Hall, Franci Hoffman, Marsha Ingrao, Jude Itakali, JulesPaige, Kenneth, MJ Mallon, Brenda Marie, Selma Martin, Michelle Ayon Navajas, Lisa Nelson, D. Wallace Peach, Freya Pickard, Dawn Pisturino, Gwen M. Plano, Jennifer Russo, Aishwarya Saby, Reena Saxena, Merril D. Smith, Nicole Smith, Ivor Steven, Ben Tonkin, Trilce Marsh Vazquez, Cheryl Wood.

My Review:

This anthology of poetry is so beautiful! From the cover to the words within, everything exudes light and hope. The book is comprised of works from poets across the world, bringing together different perspectives from many cultures. It is organized by the poet's name, so you are able to read the poems from one poet at a time. The beginning explains why the two editors, Robbie Cheadle and Colleen Chesebro, chose this theme and the tanka variations for the anthology. They also highlighted one poem from each type of tanka poem, and I was honored to see one of my poems listed there. At the end, there are links for the readers to find more works from the poets, which I found to be a nice touch.

I had SO many favorites. Many poems made my heart feel lighter. I found myself smiling, reflecting, and connecting throughout the entire book. Some of the poets whose words I really connected with are Melissa Davilio, Tamiko Dooley, Chris Hall, Marsha Ingrao, Jules Paige, Brenda Marie, Selma Martin, Michelle Ayon Navajas, D. Wallace Peach, Gwen M. Plano, Jennifer Russo, Reena Saxena, and Nicole Smith. Like I said, I loved all the poetry in this book.

As it's an annual anthology, I look forward to reading the next edition. If you enjoy reading poetry and finding moments to sit in reflection and gratitude, I highly recommend this book!

Have you read any great books lately? I'd love to hear from you.

End of the Year Reflections/2024 Books Read #2024ReadingChallenge #RRBC #bookstoread #readingcommunity #writingcommunity #poetrycommunity #TankaTuesday #greatreads #awardwinning @YvetteMCalleiro @YvetteMCalleiro.bsky.social

Hello, beautiful readers! As 2024 comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this year's writing journey. As most of you know, I live a very busy life. Besides my full-time teaching job, I also work a part-time job, attend regular appointments to manage my mental and physical health, and make time to spend with family and friends. So, it's a wonder that I get much done in my 'free time.'

I had every intention of publishing The One Redeemed (Chronicles of the Diasodz, Book 6) this year, and while that did not happen, I did finish writing the book! I take that as a win because it's taken me forever to write that book. The editing and revising is taking a bit longer than I expected, but I will not rush the process simply to publish it on my self-appointed schedule. I'm sure I'll publish it in 2025, so get ready for that series finale! If you enjoy paranormal, young adult stories and haven't read the series, I would recommend you start with my short story, The One Chosen. To find the entire series, click here.

Though I did not publish Drake's book, I did publish two short stories: Karma Doesn't Kill and A Christmas Homecoming: A Short Story.

Karma Doesn't Kill holds a special place in my heart because it was inspired by a tragedy that happened to someone I care deeply about. It's a cautionary tale that focuses on actions having consequences.

The idea of A Christmas Homecoming came to me quickly, and I ran with it. I wanted to write a story that highlighted a bit of my culture while also shining a light on adoption. So far, it has been well-received, and that makes my heart happy!

I received a few awards/honors this year for my writing. Karma Doesn't Kill won both the RRBC KCT International Literary Award at the beginning of the year and the RRBC 90-Day Alpha/Omega "Beginning-to-End" Short Story Writing Contest at the end of the year. It also received a five star review from Readers Favorite. My short story, The One Chosen: A Diasodz Short Story, came in second place for the '24 Nonnie Jules "Supreme" Book Award.

I continue to actively blog. This year, I posted a bit over 60 blog posts. I also continue to revise and edit the works of my critique partners. I get great joy in helping others with their works-in-progress and am eternally grateful for their help with my stories.

I also continue to be a part of two online groups/families that bring me great joy: Rave Reviews Book Club and #TankaTuesday. I have been a member of #RRBC since 2014, and I love being able to connect with other authors who are as passionate about writing, reading, growing our craft, supporting other authors, and creating a community of celebrating stories.

I have been a part of #TankaTuesday for the past two years, and I love the community of poets who come together every week to share their poems and support one another. These two groups have fed my love of writing and learning, and I am truly grateful for them.

I am also an avid reader, and I am happy I surpassed my books-to-read goal for this year. Honestly, I don't know how I managed to read so many books, but I always enjoy escaping into the worlds others create.  Here is my 2024 list of books:

I really enjoyed almost all the books I read this year. To see the ones I would recommend, check out my book reviews here. It would be hard to pick my top five because the stories are all so different. If I had to, I'd probably pick:

Lover Arisen/Lover Unveiled (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series) : I have been reading this series for about fourteen years. I absolutely LOVE long series, and this one is at the top because the author is still writing books. Plus, Passionflix is now creating a TV series on it. They just wrapped up season one, which will be aired in Summer 2025. If you love strong, sexy vampires who are incomplete without their females, then I highly recommend this series.

Harbor Pointe Series: All eight books in this series were fantastic. Each book is written by a different author, but they all follow the same theme. They have a paranormal flair to them, which is right up my alley!

Terra's Anthem: Tetrasphere - Book 4 (Tetrasphere Series): This is the culminating book of the series, and I love how it was wrapped up. Another paranormal series, this story mixes in real places in the world with mythology and mysticism. I absolutely loved it. (Plus, I happen to know we will see these characters again.😉)

That Darkest Place: Riverbend Book 3 (Riverbend Series): I absolutely loved this series! It is not paranormal, but that didn't matter. Each book pulled at my heart strings and made me fall in love with the broken characters. I highly recommend it!

Cherries: A Vietnam War Novel: It's the only stand-alone book on my top five list. It was extremely powerful in its retelling of the author's experiences in the Vietnam War, and I think everyone should read it.

All in all, 2024 was a productive year for me as a writer. My muse and I seem to be communicating again, and I look forward to what 2025 brings. Thank you to each of you who have been a part of this journey with me. I appreciate your support and encouragement more than you know!

May you have a wonderful new year celebration, and may 2025 bring you love, laughter, and new stories to read! :-)

#TankaTuesday #Poetry Challenge - #Syllabic #poem #poetrycommunity #haiga #Christmas #Christmastraditions @YvetteMCalleiro @YvetteMCalleiro.bsky.social

Hello, beautiful readers! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! I will be offline for a few days to celebrate the holidays and to go camping with my sister, but I wanted to complete this week's #TankaTuesday poetry challenge before I leave. This week, Melissa from Mom With a Blog invited us to write a haiga.

A haiga is a haiku embedded in a picture. Traditionally, the picture is a brush painting and the haiku is in calligraphy, but for this week's challenge, we are able to use a regular photo. I chose to create one on Canva using AI.

One of the traditions my family and I have is to play card and board games on Noche Buena, Christmas Eve. It always leads to lots of laughter, creating great memories. Last night was no exception! We had a wonderful time, sitting together around the dining table and playing various games. So, for my haiga, I chose to focus on that moment!

I wish you all a wonderful holiday filled with love and laughter!

Karma Doesn't Kill Recognition! #awardwinning #fivestars #greatread #comingofage #RRBC #lifechoices #karma @ReadersFavorite @YvetteMCalleiro

Hello, beautiful readers! I have great news to share with you! My short story, Karma Doesn't Kill, has recently been honored with two great recognitions!

The first was announced during the #RRBC "Books & Budz" Holiday Pop-Up Bookshop 2024. Karma Doesn't Kill was chosen as the GRAND PRIZE WINNER of the 2024 90-Day Alpha/Omega "Beginning-To-End" Short Story Writing Contest! This contest challenges writers to create and publish a short story within 90 days.

The second honor came from receiving the Readers' Favorite Five Star seal of approval! The reviewer wrote such a beautiful review, so I want to share it with you here:

Reviewed by Chad Richins for Readers' Favorite

Karma Doesn’t Kill by Yvette M. Calleiro is a poignant coming-of-age tale that follows JT, a young man whose life is profoundly influenced by the choices he makes. The story opens with JT's childhood, where he juggles the starkly different worlds of his parents' homes after their divorce. His father emphasizes hard work and responsibility, while his mother grapples with addiction, leaving JT feeling overlooked and lost. His life spirals downward when he is introduced to drugs by his mother's boyfriend, Matt, resulting in academic struggles and run-ins with Child Protection Services. After a drug test reveals his mother's addiction, JT's father gains custody of him. Initially, life with his father and grandfather offers stability and guidance. However, tragedy strikes when his Gramps suffers a fatal heart attack. Overwhelmed by grief and feeling emotionally distant from his father, JT decides to move back in with his now-remarried and changed mother. What kind of future awaits JT? This story is a powerful reminder of how our choices, relationships, and resilience shape our life's trajectory.

I found the emotional depth and realism in Karma Doesn’t Kill truly compelling. JT’s journey felt incredibly authentic, and his struggles with family and identity are something many readers can relate to. The opening line grabbed my attention right away and never let go. Yvette M. Calleiro has a remarkable ability to write with depth. The narrative effectively explores themes of resilience, redemption, and the importance of second chances. The pacing kept me engaged throughout, and the action—especially during the climax—was both striking and unforgettable. Calleiro balances JT’s challenges with moments of growth. Karma Doesn’t Kill is a cautionary tale about the significance of making wise choices, reaching out for family support, and finding the strength to endure life’s hardships. This book would appeal to anyone who loves heartfelt stories about overcoming obstacles. “Karma won’t kill ya, but she’ll make sure your life is hell.”

For those of you who haven't read it yet, this story was born from a tragic event that happened to someone I care deeply about. Although Karma Doesn't Kill's characters and circumstances are purely fictional, the story captures the true consequences of life's choices.

If you haven't read Karma Doesn't Kill yet, I encourage you to pick up a copy. You can grab your copy here. Happy reading!

#TankaTuesday #Poetry Challenge - #Syllabic #poem #poetrycommunity #AmericanCinquain #grounding #tarotcards #oraclecards @YvetteMCalleiro

Hello, beautiful readers! For this week's #TankaTuesday Poetry Challenge, poet Colleen Chesebro invites us to become inspired from three Oracle cards she chose from Judy Mastrangelo's Oracle deck. Here are the three cards she chose:

While all of them are beautiful, I was instantly drawn to the first one, Love of the Earth. I feel a great connection to nature and enjoy being surrounded by it. It's one of the reasons I love going to the beach and camping.

I chose to write an American cinquain. This poem form has five lines with a 2-4-6-8-2 syllabic pattern. The lines should build up in drama, with the fifth line being a pivot line. I'm not sure I brought much drama, but this is what came to me.

Hello, beautiful readers! I am excited to share with you my newest short story, A Christmas Homecoming! I started writing this story for a holiday blog tour, but when the word count exceeded the limits for the blog, I decided to turn it into its own book. It's a heartwarming story about a girl searching for her birth parents during the holidays. Here is the book blurb:

Mary always knew she was adopted. When she turned seventeen, her loving parents died in a car crash. After a year of living with an uncaring grandmother, Mary received her inheritance, including the address of her birth parents. With nothing left to lose, she hopped on a plane right before Christmas to search for them. Would they accept her into their lives, or would she find herself utterly alone on Christmas?

A Christmas Homecoming is now available on Amazon here

Valerie is eager to learn the skills needed to become a Diasodz warrior, but when she meets her new trainer, all she can think about is him. Nolan is a master trainer who has taught thousands of fledglings throughout his life. He has never had a relationship with a student nor does he plan to. When Nolan and Valerie are thrust together on a routine mission, nothing goes as planned. If they want to survive, they will need to trust each other. But how do you trust someone who has rejected you? Nolan and Valerie must find a way or lose each other forever. Note: This short story is related to the Chronicles of the Diasodz series. It takes place in the early 1600s and sets the stage for a major conflict in the series. It can be read alone, but if you enjoy it, I encourage you to read the series.

What if the fairy tale kiss that always awakens the damsel in distress takes a sinister turn? What if prince charming’s kiss no longer produces a happily ever after? Silena’s infatuation with William hits a speed bump when he rejects her. After all, she is just a maid, and he is a young, rich aristocrat in the 1920s. Why would he have any desire to waste his time with the help? On one particularly lonely day, Silena calls upon her magic to transform into a sexy flapper for the night. Her dream to enjoy one night with William is finally in her grasp, but her magic comes with consequences that neither William nor Silena could ever imagine. BONUS! This short story is followed by a preview of a book written by the author.

Cici’s junior year in high school is going to be the best year ever. Popular co-captain of the varsity cheerleading team, she’s dating the starting quarterback. Even her jealous co-captain’s attempts to steal her boyfriend can’t curb her enthusiasm. When her mom moves in with her fiancé, a handsome, wealthy man, only one small detail threatens Cici’s perfect life. The school’s social pariah is about to become her stepsister, and Cici wants nothing to do with her. Everything changes when someone Cici cares about throws her life into a tailspin, and the one person Cici couldn’t stand becomes her only ally. Warning: This story contains scenes of sexual assault.

How do you choose when both options have dire consequences? Sofia is a 17 year old girl who is quite content with her life. She has a caring boyfriend who also just happens to be her best friend since birth. She has a loving mother. She is successfully completing her last year of high school and enjoys her part-time job. She can’t imagine wanting more from her life…until Ar’ch (pronounced Ar-rick) enters her dreams, sparking a burning flame inside of her that she can’t seem to extinguish nor does she want to. Ar’ch is a Diasodz (Die-ah-sodz), a species created by the Goddess back when God created humans. Diasodz were made to heal and protect humans, but when the Diasodz turned their backs on helping humans and left Earth to live in their own world, the Goddess abandoned them. Since then, their powers and their very lives have been fading. A prophecy foretold that a young girl born on Earth would be the Diasodz’s savior. Ar’ch and his brother, Angel, travel to Earth to retrieve her and bring her back to their world before her death day in order to save their kind. Ar’ch knows the drill: find the target, capture her, and safely bring her home. But what happens when the target captures his dormant heart? Choices create action. Actions have consequences. When faced with the truth, what choice will Sofia make? Will she be able to accept the consequences that follow?

Please share with your friends! Happy shopping! :-)

Hello, beautiful readers! For this week's #TankaTuesday Poetry Challenge, poet Lisa Smith Nelson encouraged us to write a poem based on the picture she provided (see below).

I decided to write a tanka prose, which is a paragraph followed by a tanka poem. For those new to poetry, a tanka poem has five lines with a syllabic pattern of 5-7-5-7-7. Tanka proses are titled.

Queens of Yore

Eons ago, my kind was worshipped. Considered magical, pharaohs revered us as conduits to the gods and goddesses. Even in our passing, we were treated with respect and dignity. Then, society began to fear us. People ran away when they saw us, frightened we would cast a spell upon them. Insignificant humans perceived us to carry evil omens and house the devil within us. Little did they know their perception of us was simply a reflection of their own souls.

once a prized heirloom
centerpiece of living rooms
cast aside with time
ignored and broken, worthless
discarded for new treasures

#TankaTuesday #Poetry Challenge - #Syllabic #poem #poetrycommunity #Sekarageng #VietnamWar #Cherries @pdoggbiker.bsky.social @pdoggbiker @YvetteMCalleiro

Hello, beautiful readers! For this week's #TankaTuesday Poetry Challenge, poet David Bogomony, aka ben Alexander, invited us to write a Javanese form called sekar ageng. This poetry form consists of a quatrain (4 lines) with 17 syllables each. Each line has three sections of 4 syllables, 6 syllables, and 7 syllables.

This month, I have been reading a book by a Vietnam War veteran and fellow RRBC author, John Podlaski. In his book, called Cherries, he shares his experiences while overseas during this horrific war. I have not finished reading it yet, but his retelling of those painful moments linger with me. So, I decided to write my Sekar ageng about his journey.

unwanted war ~ horrors seen by young men ~ many never to come home

bounded brothers ~ joined by circumstances ~ protected one another

November Book Reviews #bookreview #books #amreading #readingcommunity #paranormal @SusanneLeist @dlfinnauthor @YvetteMCalleiro

Hello, beautiful readers! I cannot believe I haven't posted a book review since August. Actually, I can believe it. This school year has been extremely busy. I think I'm just now starting to find a routine I can keep. I did read a book in August/September, but I had a hard time enjoying the story, so that review will not be posted here. This space is to share books I enjoy.

Genre: Romantic Fantasy, Supernatural Mysteries

Pages: 253 pages

Book Blurb:

Elizabeth Reading and Scarlett Harding travel from New York City to Blue Harbor, Maine, hoping to purchase a bed-and-breakfast in a peaceful town, but what they discover is much more sinister.

After settling into an apartment building and unpacking, Elizabeth and Scarlett visit a local ice cream parlor. As they approach the counter to order, a man rushes through the doorway, clutching his throat and dying in a pool of blood at Elizabeth's feet. When the police arrive, Elizabeth stares at the dashing, blue-eyed David throwing questions at her, stunned that she agreed to a date with him a few hours ago.

When they return to the apartment and Elizabeth begins to pack her bags to leave Blue Harbor, Scarlett pleads with her to keep the appointment at the inn. The next day, they fall in love with the quaint inn and eventually sign the papers, despite Elizabeth's misgivings about the death a day earlier.

After they move into the bed-and-breakfast, they hear of residents dying under unusual circumstances and rumors of a curse placed by the Penobscot Indians on the descendants of the town's original settlers. On their first weekend as innkeepers, a violent storm hits, and two guests are slashed to death in their beds. Then the lights go out.

Will Elizabeth and Scarlett sell the inn or stay and fight the curse alongside their new friends as bodies fall around them?

My Review:

I've read this author's vampire series, so I was curious about this book. Plus, the cover is just gorgeous! This story follows Elizabeth and Scarlett as they head to Maine to buy an inn and start their lives over. Unfortunately, they arrive just as a string of murders begin to take place. They find themselves in the midst of a cursed town where the original settlers want revenge.

The book is packed with action. In fact, I don't know if the characters ever had a moment to rest. Lol! Both main characters had distinct personalities, and I could feel the strong friendship between them. They both found themselves quickly into relationships that I had a hard time getting into. That could also be because for the longest time, they were part of the suspect list. Speaking of suspects, the author did a great job keeping the murderers' identities under lock and key, and I loved that!

The curse wasn't always clear to me. I got the anger between the original settlers and the descendants, but how they identified the cursed ones and had to kill them, no questions asked, was a bit unsettling. And then, I couldn't understand why the curse continued. I have a feeling some of it was left a mystery for a second book. Still, the characters and the action kept me turning the pages. If you enjoy paranormal mystery, I think you'd enjoy this book.

Genre: Holiday Fiction

Pages: 153 pages

Book Blurb:

Miracles and Ghosts: A Christmas Collection’s eight tales bring light in the darkest of circumstances. In the novelette, A Perfect Ghostly Christmas, Julie has survived the foster care system and finally comes home. She now owns her grandparents’ house and has received an offer that appears too good to be true. On top of that, the family she felt had abandoned her during her difficult times has reentered her life. But it’s the otherworldly experiences that lead her to something her grandparents left behind. This discovery changes everything and opens a door to danger. The seven short stories explore fractured families, a widower's loneliness, a mall shooting, financial struggles, strained relationships, woodland kittens, and a woman haunted by a red truck. Whether it’s a ghost, an angel, or Santa, some unseen force is there to provide help when needed. A reminder in the busy holiday season or anytime we are never alone, and miracles are possible.

My Review:

I absolutely loved this book! It starts off with a longer short story about a girl who returns to her grandmother's house after many years to figure out what to do with the house. Memories resurface about how her grandparents died while others bring danger to her doorstep. It's a story that sucks you in and keeps you turning the pages until the end.

The rest of the book is filled with short stories, each one focused on the holiday season. The author takes tragic moments and sprinkles each one with the Christmas spirit so beautifully. My favorites include Christmas Reunion, A Man and His Cat, and The Christmas Eve Walk. This is a wonderful collection of stories to read, and it would make a great gift for others.:-)

Have you read any good books lately? I'd love to hear from you. :-)
