#TankaTuesday #Poetry Challenge #ShareYourDay @ColleenChesebro #poem #BadgersHexastich #travel #poetrycommunity

Hello, beautiful readers! This week, Colleen Chesebro's #TankaTuesday weekly poetry challenge has asked us to share our day. It's been a busy week, so today, Saturday, is the first moment I've been able to pause long enough to write anything.

I'm confined to the house as Tropical Storm Alex dumps his inches of water outside, flooding my backyard and neighborhood. No need to be concerned, really. It's just another rainy day to us, and my neighborhood always has areas that flood when it rains. My backyard also floods regularly because of the shoddy construction done when the company my ex-husband hired created our back patio. One day, I'll have enough money to redo the backyard, but that day is not today. Lol!

So, to brighten my mood on this gloomy day, I am sitting in my home office, watching the rain slowly come down and cleanse the earth, and I'm reviewing my plans for my summer trip with my son. :-) We leave in six days, and the closer we get, the more my nervous excitement builds. Everything is booked - plane, car, hotels, and activities! And still, I wonder - did I miss something?

We are going to Arizona for two weeks. Each summer, I've taken my son on a road trip through the beautiful states in America. Our goal is to see all fifty states before he graduates from high school in two years. We have three states left (Vermont, Arizona, and Hawaii). Usually, my parents join us, but my mother cannot travel because of a surgery she recently had, so it's just my son and me. We have many exciting things planned, from kayaking by the Hoover Dam to hiking through Antelope Canyon to stargazing in Sedona to seeing the Grand Canyon. It's going to be an amazing trip!

So, for this week's poem, I focused on trip planning (or rather, rechecking the plans that have already been made...lol!). I chose to write a Badger's Hexastich because I don't think I've ever written one before. It has six lines with a syllabic pattern of 2-4-6-6-4-2 and doesn't rhyme.

    1. Thanks, Miriam! I grew up as an Army brat, traveling the world, and it shaped who I am today. So, I wanted him to get a sense of how diverse and beautiful our country is so he can appreciate the uniqueness of every place and every person. :-)

  6. I love to travel too and you have caught the essence of traveling in your poem. I have been to America twice, NewYork, Boston, Nuntucket, then we did Florida, then Canada, but most of our travels are in Europe.
Your trips with your son are a great idea he will really gain from them 💜

    1. One of our road trips took us to NY, Boston, Nantucket, and into Canada. It was a beautiful trip! I've been to Europe but my son hasn't yet. Hopefully, he will get to explore the beautiful countries there as an adult. Thanks for sharing your adventures with me, Willow! :-)

  9. Jules here; First off have a wonderful trip!! I've been to Pheoinx a few times. It was always very hot so be prepared to keep water and sunscreen! I think there are some online videos about visits inside the Dam. Very noisy!

I completely missed the arrival of Alex. I think we may have had some rain, but by the time it got to us it must have lost strength. Hope you dry out soon. Living by a creek and in low ground we get regular flooding, but mostly towards the back end of the yard.

    1. Thanks for the tips, Jules! I never go anywhere without water and sunscreen, but I completely forgot about the noise inside the dam. I'll make sure to get us some ear plugs. :-)

I had a creek behind our house when we lived in Mississippi, and it flooded a few times while we were there, so I know how damaging that can be. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experiences. :-)

  10. You are going to have so... much... fun, Yvette. I was just at Antelope Canyon, and it's magical. Bring lots of cool clothes and sunscreen and a hat! What a wonderful thing to do with your son! That's awesome. You'll love Vermont and Hawaii too. I love your poem. Great energy! Have a wonderful time.

    1. Thanks, Diana! Living in South Florida, cool clothes, sunscreen, and hats are a must. Lol! Both my son and I have the dri-fit, spf, long-sleeved shirts for kayaking, so I'm thinking those are going to be perfect for our national park and canyon days. I am very much looking forward to Antelope Canyon. The pictures I've seen are amazing! Thanks for sharing your tips with us. :-)

    1. Thank you, Gwen! My son has always helped with the planning. Even when he was little, we would go online together and he would point to the activities that looked fun to him. This year, he found us the stargazing activity with professional photographers in Sedona. I can't wait! :-)
